Summer 2002 Advanced Workshop Topics

July 22 - 25, 2002

Fiber Optics: Recent Advances and Special Topics

This workshop will begin with and then build on a brief review of basic fiber optics theory and applications. The workshop will then explore advanced topics in the area that may include dense wavelength division multiplexing, erbium doped fiber amplifiers, Bragg devices, high-speed detectors and amplifiers and other pertinent topics. Demonstrations and experiments are included. New applications will be investigated, with course material revised to reflect recent trends in industry.

Advanced Wireless Workshop

This workshop will build on previous NCTT wireless workshops. There will be two major topics covered. The emerging field of 3G wireless will be considered from a global perspective. The question of what has happened in the past year, in terms of technology and world economic conditions, to influence the evolution of the mobile telephone from a voice communications device to one's primary means of connection to the world's rapidly evolving telecommunications infrastructure will be considered. Technical details and industry predictions of future growth in this area will be considered. The second topic will be the IEEE 802.xx wireless standards. They will serve as the basis to explore emerging technologies in the wireless local area network (WLAN - (802.11x) space, the fixed broadband wireless (802.16) space, and the emerging field of wireless personal area networks (WPANs - 802.15). Emphasis will be placed on newly emerging technologies such as Bluetooth and HyperLAN. The workshop participants will have some laboratory time to explore new wireless technologies and new simulation software useful for demonstrating concepts germane to these new wireless technologies.

Internet Security

This workshop is an introduction to the basic concepts of network security. Coverage includes a brief history of the Internet and continues with basic security concepts. Next specific security incidents including scans, probes, denials of service, Internet infrastructure attacks, root compromise, malicious code, and trust exploitation are covered and demonstrated when possible.
